The Cantilever House

The underside of the cantilever is lined in walnut, matching the box above and warming the entrance. Vertical timber and bronze fins on the right filter the low sun and screen the corridor beyond. A recessed reflection pool runs beside the stair at the base of the wall. Wide travertine steps line up with the door and lead directly into the foyer.

Wide travertine steps and raised planters step down from the entrance to the street, with concealed step lights along every riser. Olive trees set into each planter are uplit individually, giving depth to the terraces. A reflecting pool cuts through the center of the composition, running from the entrance out toward the driveway. On the right, a raised courtyard pool sits behind the timber-clad wing.

The living room glows through the retracted glazing, spilling warm light across the pool paving. Ground-recessed up lights wash the travertine walls and pick out the olive trees on both sides of the terrace. A covered lounge on the right, lit by concealed cove lighting, stays useable through the night. The mirror-still pool doubles the light and carries reflections of the cantilevered upper volume above.

The pool is set flush with the paving and finished with a narrow bronze band that traces the water's edge. Its dark stone lining reads as a deep teal, deeper at the far end and pale near the shallow entry step. A wide travertine walkway wraps three sides, giving room for loungers along the right edge. Fountain grasses and olive trees on the left soften the transition between paving and planting.
